ARTHRITIS AWARENESS & BETTER SLEEP MONTH
May brings attention to two areas that quietly affect many people: arthritis and sleep health. One can make movement difficult, the other can leave you feeling drained. And sometimes, they feed into each other more than we realize.
🦴 Arthritis Awareness: Keep Moving, Stay Strong
Arthritis causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, and it’s more common with age. But staying active, even gently, can actually help.
Simple ways to manage arthritis:
- Keep moving – Light activities like walking or stretching help reduce stiffness.
- Use heat or cold – Warm showers or ice packs can ease joint pain.
- Maintain a healthy weight – Less strain on your joints makes a difference.
- Don’t ignore persistent pain – Talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options (e.g. analgesics (e.g., Tylenol Arthritis, Ibuprofen), physical therapy, steroid/gel injections, joint replacement).
- Avoid frequent use of over-the-counter painkillers, as it may harm your kidneys, liver, or stomach.
😴 Better Sleep Month: Rest is Healing
Sleep is one of those things we tend to push aside…until we can’t. Poor sleep affects mood, memory, blood pressure, and overall health.
Tips for better sleep:
- Stick to a routine – Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Recommended amount of sleep is 7-9 hours per night.
- Limit caffeine late in the day – It can linger longer than you think.
- Create a calm space – Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
- Unwind before bed – Prayer, reading, or soft music can help your body slow down.
- Avoid the use of electronic devices such as phones or televisions immediately before bedtime, as blue light can suppress melatonin, a natural hormone that regulates sleep.
- Over-the-counter sleep aids are intended for short-term use only and should not be taken for more than two weeks. Consult your pharmacist or physician to ensure they do not interact with your current medication(s). Many sleep disturbances can often be resolved without pharmacological intervention.
This month is a gentle reminder. Take care of your body in motion and take care of it in rest too.
