THE WELLNESS CORNER

3 John 1:2 – “Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].”

Men’s Health Awareness Month

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month, a time to encourage men to be proactive about their health. Many common conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, can be prevented or better managed through regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices.

Men, Don’t Skip Your Checkups

Many health conditions develop quietly without symptoms. Regular visits with your healthcare practitioner can help identify problems early, when treatment is often most effective.

Healthy Habits for a Stronger Life

🔹 Eat Smart
Choose more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugary drinks, processed foods, and excess salt.

🔹 Stay Active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Walking, cycling, swimming, and yard work are great ways to stay moving.

🔹 Get Enough Sleep
Most adults need 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Good sleep supports heart health, mood, and energy levels.

🔹 Manage Stress
Spend time in prayer, worship, and fellowship. A strong support system benefits both mental and physical health.

🔹 Sexual Health

Male sexual health can be an indicator of overall physical and mental well-being. Erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues. If you experience erection problems, consult your healthcare practitioner or pharmacist. They can review your medications for any related side effects and discuss safe prescription or non-prescription options with you.

Important Screenings for Men

Talk to your healthcare practitioner about:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Cholesterol testing
  • Diabetes screening
  • Colorectal cancer screening starting at age 45
  • Prostate cancer screening based on your age, family history, and personal risk factors

This month let’s encourage the fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, and grandfathers in our lives to prioritize their health. Small steps today can lead to a healthier tomorrow.

If you have any questions or concerns, please consult your healthcare practitioner.

Stay well and be blessed,

Dr. Funmi Kayode (MD) and Dr. Bukola Folorunso (PharmD)
